That’s right folks; there really are health benefits of beer. Of course it’s not perfectly healthy, but that doesn’t mean it can’t have health benefits. If you’re looking for a reason to head down to the bar here’s five good ones.
Beer Reduces Heart Disease Risk
It doesn’t matter what kind of alcohol you drink; whether it’s a fruity drink, a nice stout, a glass of wine, or anything in between, it all reduces your heart disease risk. Drinking in moderation can make your blood less “sticky”, which means that it’s less likely to clot as a result. It can also lower your cholesterol levels and your blood pressure. A study out of Harvard even showed that women who drank beer had lower blood pressure than women who drank hard alcohol or wine.
Beer Cleans Out the Kidneys
Despite what you might have heard about the damaging effects of beer on the kidneys there are actually some health benefits of beer that surround the kidneys. For a start beer reduces your risk of developing kidney stones thanks to the hops inside them. Hops stop your bones from releasing calcium which will then go on to become kidney stones. Beer is also rich in water, which is needed to flush out your kidneys and keep them clean.
Beer Reduces Diabetes Risk
Another study from Harvard shows us that beer can reduce diabetes risk. The study was performed on 38,000 men and the results showed that when the men started drinking two beers a day they reduced their chances of developing diabetes by 25%. Don’t drink too much though because, sadly, there was no proven benefit for going over two beers a day.
Beer Can Protect Your Brain
In another myth busted beer can actually protect your brain. Of course drinking too much can still cause some really bad brain damage, drinking it moderately can keep your brain sharp. A study from the New England Journal of Medicine shows that women who had one drink a day had a 20% reduced risk of developing declining brain function. Researchers suggest that drinking alcohol can protect the blood vessels in your brain to also reduce the risks of stroke.
Beer Can Protect Your Eyes
Even though you start to lose focus and have trouble seeing if you drink too much researchers in Canada discovered that drinking a lager or stout a day can prevent cataracts from forming in the eyes. This is because beer contains antioxidants that protect your eyes, along with the rest of your body. The downside is that the effect is reversed if you have over three drinks, so don’t overdo it!
Remember that while there are some great health benefits of beer, the effects can quickly be reversed if you have too much. Beer is definitely something you need to enjoy in moderation. All these benefits only really happen if you only have one or two a day, and can quickly be reversed if you have more than three. So drink in moderation.
