Niacin

If you’re taking a multivitamin with niacin, or vitamin B-3 should be fine if you’re also taking other nutrients. Problems can arise if you’re using niacin supplements for cholesterol though. If you’re looking to control cholesterol then avoid mixing niacin with Vitamin A as beta-carotene and Vitamins C and E can reduce the ability of niacin to increase your good cholesterol levels, rendering them effectively useless.

Folate

Folate is a B vitamin that you can usually find in B complex vitamins or in a multivitamin that has B-12 in it. While there shouldn’t really be any problems with taking B-12 and folate at the same time, folate can actually mask a deficiency of B-12. The people that are most at risk of having a deficiency of B-12 are older people, vegetarians and people who suffer from gastrointestinal disorders. Having a deficiency of B-12 can lead to anemia, which can be helped with folate. However if you don’t address the B-12 deficiency then you can still suffer from permanent nerve damage. If you feel that you might have a B-12 deficiency, or are at risk of developing one, then it’s important to consult your doctor and get their advice on how to proceed.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K is an important tool for your body to protect you from blood clots. If you’ve been prescribed vitamin K supplements by your doctor then it’s important to avoid taking high doses of Vitamins E and A, which can counteract those beneficial vitamin K effects. If you find that your blood clots too easily then your doctor may also advise you to avoid taking extra vitamin K supplements and keeping your dietary sources of vitamin K consistent. Make sure that you listen to what your doctor says and follow their advice if you’re on blood-thinning medication.

 

Keep in mind that dietary supplements have different levels of nutrients and different nutrients in general. If you’re going to take a multivitamin then you need to avoid taking over 100% of your recommended daily allowance of each nutrient. If your doctor prescribes you vitamin supplements then you should consult with your doctor about the supplements you already take so you can avoid taking too many of a particular vitamin and mixing vitamins you shouldn’t.
